The ‘kaasmarkt’ (cheese market) takes place, every Friday, from March until September, in Alkmaar, Holland. It’s an old-age tradition which dates back to the 16th century, and visitors come from near and far to watch the event. A commentary is available in Dutch, English, French and German to explain the procession, including the putting out of the cheeses, the call of the ‘cheese father’ (master of ceremonies), cheese inspection and weighing and the carrying of the cheese. Every week, around 30 tons of Edam and Gouda are lined up on the square, as can be seen in the photo. To find out more
